London Local Authorities Bill

15/01/2025

John Dyson gave evidence today to MP's sitting in Committee on provisions in the London Authorities Bill which require the mandatory display by food premises of hygiene rating scores.

The British Hospitality Association has petitioned against the Bill on the grounds that:-

  • The Food Standards Agency (FSA) policy is that display of Food Hygiene Ratings should be voluntary until at least April 2012 when the scheme has been evaluated.
  • Only 4 out of 33 Local Authorities in London have signed up to the FSA National Scheme.  This is far below the national average with 40% in England, 70% in Northern Ireland and 100% in Local Authorities in Wales launching the scheme by June 2012.
  • At the committee stage in the House of Lords a clause was inserted in the Bill which made display mandatory only where the national scheme has been implemented.
