The Responsibility Deal is a new method of working between Government, Industry and non-governmental organisations. It has been created to promote improvements in public health by a voluntary approach which engages organisations from the food industry rather than a regulatory approach.
In order to achieve its objectives networks have been set up which cover food, alcohol, exercise and health at work. There is also a behaviour change network which supports the other networks.
COCOMS Managing Director, John Dyson, is a member of the Food Network and Behaviour Change Networks. The Food network has developed pledges which organisations will sign up to including the reduction of salt levels in food, the removal of artificial trans fats from food and providing calorie information to consumers in "out of home" settings. More than 150 companies have signed up to the pledges so far.
